The December 12, 1948 Michigan State News headline "STATE MAKES BIG 10" fulfilled the dreams of President John Hannah. From the 1949 Record "Formal application for membership was first made by MSC in 1946, when the University of Chicago relinquished its place in the conference . . . More than 6,000 students rallied around the Memorial Union building a few hours after the acceptance news flashed from the Western Conference meeting in Chicago."
